Stay Warm and Stay Safe

As the temperatures drop and we prepare for the chill of winter, many of us turn to space heaters for that extra bit of warmth. While they are convenient and effective, it’s essential to remember that space heaters can also pose a safety risk if not used properly. At Southeastern Indiana REMC, your safety is our priority, so let’s talk about how to stay cozy and safe this season.

Choosing the Right Heater

When selecting a space heater, look for models with safety features like tip-over protection and overheat shut-off. Make sure it has been tested and certified by a recognized testing laboratory, such as UL (Underwriters Laboratories).

Placement is Key

Always place your space heater on a flat, level surface, and keep it at least three feet away from flammable materials like curtains, furniture, and bedding. Never use a space heater to dry clothes or as a primary heat source.

Power Up Safely

Plug your space heater directly into a wall outlet. Avoid using extension cords or power strips, as they can overheat and cause a fire. If the plug or cord feels hot, disconnect the heater immediately and inspect for damage.

Turn It Off

Never leave your space heater unattended. Turn it off when you leave the room or go to bed. It’s also a good habit to unplug the heater when it’s not in use to prevent any potential electrical hazards.

Kid and Pet Safety

Keep space heaters out of the reach of children and pets. Teach your family about the importance of staying safe around these devices and create a “kid-free zone” around the heater.

Regular Maintenance

Check your space heater regularly for signs of wear and tear. If you notice frayed cords, damaged plugs, or unusual noises, it’s time to replace it. Keeping your heater in good working condition ensures it operates safely.

By following these simple tips, you can enjoy the warmth and comfort of your space heater without worry. Stay warm, stay safe, and as always, stay connected with Southeastern Indiana REMC for more safety tips and updates!
