Winter Emergency Planning

As winter approaches, it's essential to prepare for potential storms and power outages to ensure your safety and comfort. By taking proactive steps now, you can stay warm, connected, and secure throughout the season. Here are some key tips to help you get ready:

1. Build an Emergency Kit

Assemble a comprehensive emergency kit that includes:

  • Flashlights with extra batteries

  • Warm blankets and clothing layers

  • Non-perishable food and bottled water

  • A first-aid kit and necessary medications

  • Portable chargers for phones and essential electronics

Having these items readily available ensures you're prepared for any situation.

2. Have a Backup Power Plan

If you use a generator, ensure it's in good working condition and always operate it outdoors in a well-ventilated area. For those without a generator, consider conserving battery life on devices by lowering screen brightness and closing unnecessary apps. SEIREMC offers a Generator Program that provides members with discounts on Generac Generators, along with installation and maintenance services.

3. Stay Informed with SEIREMC Alerts

Stay connected with SEIREMC for real-time updates during storms. Follow us on Facebook when there is a major outage to get accurate information from headquarters!

4. Protect Your Plumbing

Prevent frozen pipes by:

  • Opening cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around indoor plumbing

  • Letting faucets drip slightly during extreme cold to keep water moving

  • Insulating exposed pipes, especially in unheated areas like basements and garages

These measures can help avoid costly repairs and maintain your home's integrity.

5. Use Heating Appliances Safely

When using space heaters or fireplaces:

  • Place space heaters on stable surfaces, at least three feet away from flammable materials, and never leave them unattended

  • Use a screen with fireplaces to prevent sparks, and keep flammable items at a safe distance

Adhering to these safety practices reduces the risk of accidents during the colder months.

6. Develop a Family Communication Plan

Establish a communication strategy with your family to stay connected during outages. Designate a central check-in point and ensure everyone knows how to reach each other, especially elderly or vulnerable members who may need additional assistance.
