Behind the Numbers

Welcome to Behind the Numbers! This column is designed to provide you

with an inside look at the numbers that drive Southeastern Indiana REMC

and the services we provide to you, our valued members. Each month, we’ll

explore data, trends, and insights to help you better understand how your

cooperative operates and how we’re working to safely deliver reliable and

affordable electricity and fiber services.

Energy Usage Trends

As the seasons change, so does your energy usage. Understanding these patterns can help you save money and make informed decisions about energy consumption. Here’s what the data tells us about how members typically use electricity throughout the year:

Winter (December to February):
Heating demands often cause electricity usage to peak, especially during extremely cold spells. Space heaters, heat pumps, and increased indoor activity contribute to higher bills.

Spring (March to May):
Usage tends to dip during these months, as mild weather reduces the need for heating or cooling. This is often the lowest energy consumption period for most households.

Summer (June to August):
Air conditioning becomes the primary driver of higher electricity usage. Peak demand hours typically occur in the late afternoon and early evening when temperatures are at their highest.

Fall (September to November):
Like spring, fall usually sees a reduction in energy use as cooler weather lessens the need for air conditioning and heating.

How You Can Save

Knowing when energy usage peaks can help you plan to save. Here are some tips to lower your bill during high-usage periods:

  1. Use a programmable thermostat: Set it to lower your heating or cooling needs during times when you’re away from home or asleep.

  2. Shift energy-intensive tasks: Run appliances like dishwashers, washing machines, and dryers during off-peak hours when electricity demand (and rates, if applicable) are lower.

  3. Seal and insulate: Proper insulation and sealing air leaks can reduce heating and cooling costs year-round.

  4. Leverage natural light: In the winter, open curtains during the day to let in sunlight and close them at night to keep warmth in.

How to Monitor Your Usage

Southeastern Indiana REMCs SmartHub app is a tool you can use to track your energy usage easily. By logging into your SmartHub account, you can:

  • View daily and monthly usage.

  • Compare usage patterns to identify potential savings opportunities.
